Africa's "Small Five" (or "Little Five") are the Elephant Shrew, Leopard Tortoise, Rhino Beetle, Buffalo Weaver, and Antlion, playfully named for sharing part of their names with the famous "Big Five" (Elephant, Leopard, Rhino, Buffalo, Lion) and highlighting smaller, often overlooked safari creatures.

These animals showcase the diverse smaller wonders of the African bush, with the Antlion larva being a ferocious pit-trap builder, the Rhino Beetle incredibly strong, the Elephant Shrew a tiny mammal with a long nose, the Leopard Tortoise a large tortoise with spotted patterns, and the Buffalo Weaver a large weaver bird.

The Small Five in Detail:

  1. Elephant Shrew: A small, insect-eating mammal with a long, flexible snout, distantly related to elephants.
  2. Leopard Tortoise: A large tortoise with distinctive spots, resembling a leopard's coat.
  3. Rhino Beetle: A strong beetle with a horn, like a miniature rhino.
  4. Buffalo Weaver: A large weaver bird, often the red-billed species, known for its large communal nests.
  5. Antlion: The predatory larva of a winged insect, known for digging conical pits to trap ants.
